How to safely store hazardous materials and why it’s so important.
Why Should A Cabinet Be Used To Store Chemicals?
COSHH cabinets have been designed for secure chemical storage. While they are not able to remove the risk entirely, they can be an effective way of managing it. COSHH cabinets should also be appropriately colour coded as well as clearly identified with the appropriate hazard symbol. They are leak-proof, secure, reinforced and specifically designed to contain various substances.
What Type Of Cabinet Do I Need?
When on the market for a cabinet to store substances hazardous to health; you need to ask yourself a few questions:
- What exactly am I storing? e.g. flammable, irritants, corrosives etc.
- How much room do I have?
- Does my cabinet need to be mobile?
There are different types of hazardous storage to choose from; CoSHH, Chemical, Hazardous and Flammable. Storage types include a standard floor unit, a wall-mounted option designed to save space, stackable to utilise room or mobile (on wheels) to effortlessly transport materials.
There are different types of customisation for some cabinets;
Sloping Top – some models will offer the option of a sloping top. The purpose of this is to avoid others leaving items on top of the cabinet which can cause trouble when trying to gain access. Instead, the item(s) will just slide off.
Liquid Sump – an integral sump will collect any liquid drips or spills and retain them to avoid unnecessary maintenance whilst eliminating exposure.
COSHH – COSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health and is an acronym for the legislative measures in place for safety in the workplace regarding chemicals/hazardous materials.
Here are some general principles to follow for safe COSHH substance storage:
- Designated Storage Area: Find a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area for COSHH substances. Avoid storing them near heat sources, direct sunlight, or reactive materials.
- Separation is Key: Store incompatible substances separately. For instance, acids and alkalis should never be stored together.
- Suitable Containers: COSHH substances should be stored in their original, labelled containers. Secondary containment, like a spill deck for liquids, can provide additional spill protection.
- Labelling Matters: Ensure all containers, including partially used ones, are clearly labelled with the substance name, hazard pictograms, and any relevant safety information.
- Good Housekeeping: Maintain a clean, organized storage area. Regularly inspect containers for leaks or damage and address any issues as soon as possible.
Hazardous materials from common household cleaners to industrial chemicals, can pose serious threats to our health and safety if not handled and stored properly. It is important that all employees are educated so we can minimize these risks and ensure our homes, workplaces, and the environment stay safe.
