The Best Snow Clearing Equipment of 2016

It’s come to that time of year where you start assessing your readiness for winter. This usually comes in the form of checking how much salt/grit you’ve got left, if you have any at all. You also need to ask whether your previous has worked effectively in the past. If not, it might be time to change! That’s where we come in. Regardless of whether you’ve not been prepared before, or whether you chose the wrong snow clearing equipment, in this post we’ll look at viable options.

Now, all of our products are excellent quality as we wouldn’t stock them otherwise. However, we’ve decided to shine a light on those that are perhaps more practical, long-lasting etc.

Shovels

One thing to look out for when purchasing a shovel is what the base is made of. Of course snow and ice is wet. If you opt for a metal shovel, over time it will rust, leaving dirty snow in its path. In addition to this, it will also decrease in ability to effectively clear large amounts of snow. With a Corrosion Proof Shovel you needn’t worry. This long lasting shovel is non adhesive, lightweight and virtually shatter proof.

Another quality product is the 3 Piece Vehicle Snow Kit for when you’re on the move. It includes an ice scraper, heavy duty shovel with a deeper pan to collect more snow before redistributing and a multi-angle brush. The shovel is telescopic so not only you reduce the size for storing away, it can also be altered dependant on the level of snow/ice.

Snow Ploughs

Talk about time-effective! If you’ve got a forklift, put it to good use with this Forklift Snow Plough Attachment. Ideal for clearing snow and ice from large surface area. An efficient piece of equipment which is also less strenuous on the body, especially in freezing temperatures. Even when the rubber strip wears down, you can purchase a replacement separately.

For smaller businesses or those that don’t have use of a forklift, this Push Along ‘V’ Blade Plough is more than worth its money. The “V” design essentially fulfils two jobs in one. With a normal straight blade plough you would have to push it forward and then to the side to clear it up and out of the way. This model however does it itself by clearing the path completely.

Salt Spreaders

If you’ve been keeping a close eye on the weather forecast, you might want to salt your premises the night before. The Tractor Salt Spreader or the Tow Behind Spreader are ways in which this could be accomplished. If salt/grit is already on the ground when snow starts to fall, it’s less likely to settle as it would on dry ground. The ‘mobile’ spreaders don’t just have to be used beforehand, they can of course distribute salt over set snow to make it melt much quicker.

Also available are manual Hand Push Salt Spreaders. This particular stainless steel model is capable of holding up to 50 litres of salt! That should be more than enough for most premises and is a much more productive way to distribute salt evenly across the ground. If a smaller capacity model is required, other options are available.

Salt (and Grit Bins!)

Salt is definitely your friend when it comes to poor weather conditions. Whether you decide to scatter it by hand or load it into your salt spreader – you can never have enough. The usual choice is between White De-icing Salt and Rock Salt. White de-icing salt is usually preferred for businesses as it doesn’t leave behind a residue. Brown rock salt is often used to grit roads and doesn’t clump due to anticaking agent used. With regards to quantities, again dependant on the size of your business, salt is usually available in separate (25kg bags) or a pallet of 42 or 49 bags (bigger discount on bulk ordering).

Grit bins are used to store salt/grit when not in use. They have lids (some lockable) which ensure the contents don’t get damp, deeming it unusable. A grit bin is a great way of keeping salt fresh for use year after year. Much similar to salt spreaders, the storage capability much depends on the size of your business. For example, there’s no point in getting a 500kg bin if you’re only going to use a small amount each year.
